Nepal - Andrew Kirkby

Connection Lost

Connection Lost the new work By Frizza is opening at Gaffa Gallery 6pm on February 24th. The Show is a raw documentation of post 1960's sexual exploration and how the internet has spawned a global semi reality of sexual experience in a post 1980's safe sex environment. Its impact is a stark contrast between the taboo shift in moral and social acceptability of Cyberscape and daily reality.

The Portraits, a collection of over 5000 different individuals from all around the world were met via personals sites and photographed using their webcams. Men were given no more than 5 minutes and women no more than 15 minutes of interaction. All images were captured during webcam sessions with the individuals prior to their knowledge, providing a real insight into the true behaviors of those recorded. The scope of the work spans all demographics from 18 to over 80, Male, Female,Trans Gender, Straight, Gay, Rich Poor, and hundreds of cultural and ethnic diversities. It is though this the true scale of the phenomena is revealed.

In a very special one-time event at Gaffa Gallery, American fringe photographer Ken Werner presents his stunning Kodachrome slides of the deranged and extreme characters of the Halloween street celebrations in San Francisco's famed Castro District. Ken is the author of the underground classic photo-documentary HALLOWEEN: A Fantasy In Three Acts and also the creator of the award-winning U.S. magazine DARKROOM. His archive of Halloween images from the final quarter of the 20th century is a unique resource, and he's selected the most astonishing images of all for this special Sydney event, which follows on its acclaimed Australian premiere at last year's "Hello Darkness" Festival in Melbourne.

Ken will also briefly discuss the history of Halloween in San Francisco, and the surprising and inspiring events that followed the publication of his Halloween book.

Over the past few years I have been working with Shane processing and printing interesting series of images using a really interesting technique. This work is now for the first time comming together in a public exhibition. The following extract is taken from Shane on the work.....

"Using a technique I developed in 2006, I've photographed the portraits of 5 Latin American Artists', who tell the stories of their journey from South America to practicing artists in Sydney.

The Portraits are the first series of this technique to be shown for public viewing. The essay's are a collaboration with Liliana E Correa who has researched and collated all the Artists information.

This exhibition will also display a collection of Latin American Instruments from a private collection. There will be a demonstration and talk tracing the origin and history of Latin American Music on Tuesday the 11th and Tuesday the 18th."

Edwards Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros

Had a great day today with Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. I went up to Kurnell with them and filmed on Kodak 64T super 8 motion film and shot some stills on my Hasselblad. I met Danny Clayton through Andrew G a few months ago and since meeting I have had fun processing a wide range of films for him. These include cross processed Agfa Precisa, Scotch 400, and Rs1000.... amongst other films you don't see everyday. The images above are some cool examples of his work i really like the colour gamut in both of these. Today I shared time with Danny in the darkroom printing a nice Black and White portrait which he had shot on his Holga camera. Its was fun being able to print the image with him there while it was being created and show him how burning, dodging and the whole development process is undertaken. A peek Through The Lighthouse Lab - Sandy Prints

The first picture here shows our 2 mural enlargers with vacuum walls, please excuse the wooden crates on the floor they are an exhibition due to be shipped overseas which we just printed.

Image number shows one of our 4x5" enlargers which we use for proofing jobs etc, next to it on the right is a paper coffin, and on the left just peaking in there is the second vacuum wall. Upon the shelf are diffusion boxes for the enlargers.

Image number 3 shows our Kodak LVT film recorder in the background next to the door, Our 50" Ra-4 paper processor with numerous boxes of paper below it and a paper coffin. In the foreground is another 10x10" enlarger.

Image number 4 is the same 10x10" enlarger as was in image number 3. The black box in the wall is the paper take up to our 50" ilfochrome processor. with boxes of paper below. This processor can also process Black and white resin paper.

Image number 5 is one of our light tables in the mural printing room.

Image number 6 shows the two paper processors the 50" RA-4 in the foreground and the 50" Ilfochrome processor in the background.

Image number 7 is of the black and white fiber printing rooms darkroom sink, we also have 2 durst enlargers in there im yet to photograph.

Image number 8 is of the filing draws and stairs up to the mezzanine level where we do all our film scanning and digital work, also rest and relax. On the far left you can see the kitchen area.

Image number 9 is looking down the hallway into the kitchen and bathroom.

Image 10 is a picture of our daylight chemical prep sink.

Image 11 shows inside the film processing room where film is loaded.

Image 12 shows my C-41 dip and dunk processor

image 13 shows the main room of the lab where prints are spotted examined and packaged away.Behind the table on the right you can see the 2 film drying cabinets for my E-6 and C-41 film processors.

This weekend sandy and I held a cocktail party to get together with everyone and celebrate the massive changes we have been making to the facility and the launch of our new services. Big Changes at The Lighthouse

Hello

Over the past month massive changes have been taking place with The Lighthouse Lab.

The lease agreement as planned expired on the Lighthouse Labs Bondi location this year and it was my decision not to renew the agreement. Instead after a lot of consideration and many talks with a dear friend and role model of mine, master printer Sandra Barnard who owns and runs Sandy Prints in Lane Cove. We have decided to share space in lane cove offering a wider range of services to our clients. Her website is located at www.sandyprints.com.au

I have disconnected the land line at the Bondi facility and will not be reconnecting it at Lane Cove. I am now available only on the Lighthouse Lab Number 0415 677 522. Unlike the Bondi facility where I worked 7 days a week I am now only available by appointment.

Over the past five years I have had a great time in Bondi, I have worked with a lot of great people and worked on many awesome projects as can be seen through this blog.

I look forward to an exciting future working with my clients, their projects and also taking time to work on my own photographic ventures which over the past few years have been on the back burner due to the heavy workloads at The Lighthouse. With the New facility I will now be able to offer hand crafted RA-4, B&W and Ilfochrome Murals 50inch x?", Film Recording up to 8x10" from digital files and a range of other services I have previously been unable to undertake. Working alone it has been an incredibly big project for me to make this move. I met Andrea Klucis nine years ago at a photographic supply company called Vanbar. Some years Later we both worked at the Original Platinum Imaging facility a small pro lab that offered E-6,C-41 and B&W Dip and Dunk processing along with Fuji Fontier Minilab printing. Since those awesome days I went on to work at Photo Technica and later Build The Lighthouse Lab and Andrea went on to work at Foto Riesel another Awesome company which sells photographic supplies and cameras. Apart from Andreas amazing knowledge on all things photographic she is also an awesome photographer. This image I have on display above was given to me as a gift by her. It reminds me of the days as a child the local pub in Budgiewoi where I grew up used to have Wet T-shirt competitions and a sea of bikies would swell around the pub. Being just a kid all I would see was inked up arms and not enough space to swing a cat.

Thanks andrea for the photograph and all the advice and knowledge you have instilled in me over the years.

Its always a good day at the lighthouse when Wazza leaves new film. Most commonly shooting on 6x17 and using E-6 film his images are always perfectly exposed, have brilliant composition and when they find their way to the lightbox they are so radiant. It's work like this which is one of the reasons I love what I do so much even if it is a tease making me dream of how ide love to travel to so many of the places he has been hahaha.

Stain Series - Stephen Frizza

This image was created in 2 parts. The First part the subject material was a piece of Ilford resin black and white paper I had taken and exposed to light. I then splashed it with a variety of different chemicals then lain a second sheet of photographic paper upon it. I then splashed more photographic chemicals upon the sheet of paper and let the liquid crystallize upon its surface. I then left the paper on the floor of my darkroom for 1 month, letting my shoe occasionally step on it letting mold and mildew build up in colonies to produce this alien landscape.

The second part of this image was done by taking this piece of paper and placing it on a copy stand where i made an 8x10" transparency and an 8x10" colour negative from it. The original landscape (the top image) was about 25cm x 47cm in size while the final image is to be printed 50 inches by 95 inches to consume the viewer in this landscape of chemical, Bacterial and fungal mess. I have provided 2 other samples of small sections of the image (the second two photographs here) so you can see close up some of the landscape.

Home Made Lens Test

With how busy The Lighthouse Lab keeps me I rarely find the time to shoot. So when I do its usually in ungodly hours of the morning or night. This series of 6 images was shot on a lens I had made myself out of plastic pipe and some pieces of curved glass that I was given from a friend who has recently retired from the Photographic Industry. I focus literally by holding the front element of glass at different distances along the tube, also if i tilt the glass i use to focus it throws areas out of focus similar to a lens Baby. Mind you i like the fact my creation was free. Because of how it distorts and has issues focusing i feel the lens had drunk vision...so i took it out for a night on the town. Holocaust - M.I. Records

Every week The Lighthouse Lab will have at least one client come in with old film that has been sitting in either their home or the home of a relative for well over 20 years. Sometimes these rolls offer nothing, more often than not they have images of a by gone holiday or the family with the their first car. Nice nostalgic images which are treasure finds. Every few months though these old films yield truly astonishing images. This week such a roll arrived at The Lighthouse.
While it was in very poor condition it proved to hold almost 60 very interesting images from world war two. This film however was not the original film but clearly a duplicate of an original made in the late 1940's. The final exposure on the roll indicates it was for The British Ministry of Information however as to why they never processed this piece of film remains a mystery.

The PMA (Photo Marketing Association) had their convention at Darling Harbour this week. Having attended I was suprised at how much Analog has been squeezed out of it. The Ilford stand a company loved for its awesome Black and White Film, Silver Gelatin Paper and Analog processing Chemistry only had Ilford Inkjet papers on display with no mention of anything Analog, The Fuji Stand a company which produces great products like Velvia, Reala and Neopan didn't have anything about film or analog products on display. And then there was Kodak whom I felt must have been mocking anlog by only having kodak 400 Max film and disposable cameras on display... A huge lack of analog! especially since kodak just launched kodak Ekta 100 a new colour film this year. All was not in vain though! This beautiful photograph was shot on an 8x10" sheet of EPY which was cross processed. The negative which resulted is ultra dense but when printed with an exposure time of close to 13 minutes (not seconds) minutes!!!! this is the beautiful image that results. James is truly a master with the 8x10 format and I really enjoyed working with him on producing this image. I had no idea such things were possible. I met Juilee Pryor at a place called Platinum Imaging very early on in my photographic career. Since the first time I met her I have been hooked, she is one of the coolest artists in sydney who experiments with a range of photographic mediums. My favorite of hers is her Infra Red which is done on the now discontinued Kodak HIE. I mainly process her C-41 and E-6 materials and really enjoy seeing the magic she makes. Long Bay Jail

The Past month I have been juggling client work at the lighthouse lab with a private commission from the Heritage Office and The Department of Correctional Services to spend one month at Long bay Correctional Facility. This Site was built well over 100 years ago originally as an isolated women's prison. Over the years it has grown into one of the biggest male prisons in the country with some interesting features. Such as a hospital for prisoners and The largest coal fired boilers in the southern hemisphere. The boilers were a Highlight of my shooting there! The place was ultra dirty but the turn of the century machinery was stunning. One aspect of the job which at first worried me was that because of the jobs duration they did not have someone with me at all times. In fact there was never anyone with me, but the inmates were all really friendly.
The facility was quite diffrent to what i expected. The job was completed on 2800 sheets of 4x5" but im sure I could have easily shot another 2800 sheets there.

New Year 2008

This image was photographed by Michael Waite. The process he used to create the colour in this image is very interesting. It is done by taking 3 images on black and white film and I had to sit very very still. The first image is shot through a red filter, the second through a green filter and the third through a blue filter. The three black and white negatives are then paired with their complimentry CYM colour accoring to the filter they were exposed with. Then when printed the diffrent densities of the negatives and their CYM filters combine to produce these colour renditions. This image was scanned by Mike Cockcroft of Bit Depth making sure to keep the colour true to its analog form. The image was then used to make my end of year cards.Thanks Michael Waite and Mike Cockroft for your great work.

Of all the people Im lucky to work with Andrew must be the one who utilizes the most different analog photographic formats and cameras from 35mm 360 degree to 120 holgas I could rant for hours on the cool stuff he shoots with and then there is the Film Stocks he uses! Its a lot of fun. Often when photographers use heaps of diffrent formats they use none of them well, with andrew this is definantly not the case! These two images were commissioned by Rebecca Ryber as part of her COFA major work. The top image was the feature piece in her exhibited works based on past lives, The second image of her with the snake was not used, however I still really liked the shot so decided to share it with you. The images were shot at midnight on cliffs just around from The Gap at Watsons Bay.The air was freezing which resulted in really nice goosebumps on her skin. I used EPR 4x5" and cross processed the film, this along with the hard lighting and pale make up produces this hard mute look.

Buna Collection

The Buna collection is actually a collection of images from 35mm kodak motion picture NITRATE FILM. The origin of the Film is from a deceased estate in Sydney. The material was being sold by the estate seller because they thought there might be a buyer interested in the old motion picture cans. They were in a very poor condition so badly corroded that they could not be opened as rust had sealed them shut. My intrest spiked though when on some of the reel labels I could read Nitrate Film. So I purchased all 7 reels for $20.00 just so I could do some tests on just how flammable Nitrate Film really was. Upon finally opening the tins which were bloody hard to open I realised there was content on the films. When I viewed them this is a sample of what I saw...raw unedited footage of Japanese soldiers who had been killed during world war two in Buna. The 7 reels contain about 500 deceased soldiers each getting about 5 seconds of footage.
These reels are now in the process of being duplicated and preserved for historical records.

Fiona Wolf is a local photographer who I have known since lauching The Lighthouse lab. Over the past 5 years I have processed and printed a variety of awesome projects for her ranging from studies of cars, lawn bowlers, ladies in their lingerie and now men in their underwear. The projects continue and I always look forward to next thing with fiona. Her most common photographic medium in the Hasselblad 6x6 format. However she has been creatively using an Agfa Clack which produced the top two photographs. I met Jeff Leaming through a website called APUG which is an acronym for Analog Photography Users Group. His photography is brilliant, incorporating a variety of analog techniques and formats. This Image was produced by him using a technique called Red Scale. It is where the film is exposed in the camera the wrong way around (exposing through the film base and anti halation layer) which results in a catastrophic reddish colour rendition. Sydney Based Fashion Magazine Cream turned 10 and to commemorate the event Cream Magazine asked for us to go through the photo archives of their publication and print 130 feature photographs from the years. Anthony Amos - Impermanence

Tony Amos is a brilliant Australian artist whos work pushes the boundries of photographic processes and materials. For me the highlight of this comming exhibition is the hand made surfboards he has created and coated in liquid emulsion before photographically printing upon them and sealing them in fiberglass. Tony is one of the few artists in Australia who prints his own work giving him total control of his creative process. I am privillaged to process C-41 and E-6 film for him under his guidance. Film Reticulation

This Image is an example of Controlled Film Reticulation using Fuji Neopan 400. The way this is created is by placing the film into liquids of large temperature diffrences very suddenly. The emulsion goes into shock creating either globule or crack effects. With most film it is difficult to control the way the emulsion reticulates however with Fuji Neopan 400 it is possible to repeat the process in a controlled environment and get the same results each time. To achieve the degree of reticulation in the image shown above the film must be processed as normal and then reticulated during the final wash. The first wash bath should be at 3 degrees celcius for 2 minutes before shocking the film by placing it into a second wash bath heated to 90 degrees celcius for one minute. After the film has been in the water at 90 degrees celcius re immerse in wash which is 3 degrees and repeat the process. After this is done when the film is dried the emulsion always has this degree of reticulation. Thanks goes to Mark Barwald who sat for this portrait. During my earlier years experimenting with materials and processes mark was often a subject.
